Stealth cuts

Filed under: Tax — admin @ 7:53 pm

David Cameron has promised that “every pound” of new green taxes to combat climate change would be spent on cutting “family taxes”. He said: “I think people will have faith in green taxes if we say every pound on a green tax will come off a family tax.”

But Dave, if those “green” taxes raise any worthwhile money, they will have failed to make people stop flying / recycle etc.

So either;
1. These green taxes will not benefit the environment in which case you’re bullshitting the green lobby
or;
2. The green will benefit the environment, but raise little money, in which case you’re bullshitting those married people that you think are gagging for a tax break.

Which is it Dave?

And if the green taxes are effective, will you then find the money for “family tax cuts” by cutting services or putting up other people’s taxes?

  2. Good blog, sir. But this angle on green taxes is not quite right. Fuel taxes raise revenue. They also disincentivize driving. We would drive more if petrol cost 20p rather than £1 per gallon. It is not either-or - these are sloping demand curves.

    Green taxes ought to be the only thing the Parties agree on - except our somewhat childish politics does not allow for that.
